'Fat City' star Susan Tyrrell dead at 67
AUSTIN, Texas, June 19 (UPI) -- Oscar-nominated actress and Texas resident Susan Tyrrell has died, her Web site said. She was 67.
SusanTyrrell.com said she died Sunday, but offered no details about the exact cause or location.
Born Susan Jillian Creamer in San Francisco, Tyrrell is best known for her work in John Huston's 1972 drama "Fat City." Her other film credits include "Bad," "Angel," "Avenging Angel," "Cry-Baby," "Flesh and Bone," "Islands in the Stream," "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden," "Tales of Ordinary Madness," "Forbidden Zone" and "Big Top Pee-Wee." She appeared on the TV shows "Baretta," "Starsky and Hutch" and "Kojak," as well.
People.com said Tyrrell contracted the rare blood disease essential thrombocytosis, which resulted in the loss of both legs, in 2000. She continued working, however, and had roles in the 2003 movie "Masked and Anonymous" and "The Devil's Due at Midnight" in 2004. Her final credit was this year for a project called "Kid-Thing."
'Homeland,' 'Community' win top TV awards
LOS ANGELES, June 19 (UPI) -- "Homeland" was named Best Drama and its star Claire Danes Best Actress in a Drama at the Critics Choice Television Awards Monday night in Beverly Hills, Calif.
"Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston took home the prize for Best Actor in a Drama, while his co-star Giancarlo Esposito snagged the trophy for Best Supporting Actor at the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
Christina Hendricks earned the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama accolade for her work on "Mad Men."
"Community" was declared Best Comedy, while "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler and "New Girl" leading lady Zooey Deschanel shared the Best Actress in a Comedy title.
Louis C.K. was declared Best Actor in a Comedy for "Louie."
Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen picked up matching Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy awards for their performances in "Modern Family."
"Sherlock" won the Best TV Movie or Miniseries honor and its star Benedict Cumberbatch scooped up the prize for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.
Julianne Moore won the statuette for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for "Game Change."
"The Voice" won the award for Best Reality Series" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" won the Best Talk Show honor.
Bobby Brown marries Alicia Etheredge
LOS ANGELES, June 19 (UPI) -- New Edition singer Bobby Brown married Alicia Etheredge in Hawaii, People.com reported.
Among the guests at the Monday ceremony were Brown's children -- Landon, 23, La'Princia, 22, and Bobby Jr., 19 -- as well as Brown and Etheredge's son, Cassius, 3.
Bobby Jr. posted a photo of the newlyweds and members of their wedding party on Instagram. The image shows Brown and his youngest son in red suits and Adidas sneakers. Etheredge and a bevy of flower girls wore traditional white dresses.
Bobbi Kristina, Brown's daughter with his late ex-wife Whitney Houston, did not attend the ceremony, People.com said.
Houston accidentally drowned in a hotel bathtub last February after drinking alcohol and using cocaine. She was 48.
Colfer's comedy film gets distributor
NEW YORK, June 19 (UPI) -- Tribeca Film says it has acquired the U.S. rights to "Glee" star Chris Colfer's big-screen debut, the high-school comedy "Struck By Lightning."
Colfer also wrote the screenplay for the movie, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring. Directed by Brian Dannelly, it co-stars Allison Janney, Polly Bergen, Rebel Wilson, Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Hyland and Angela Kinsey.
Tribeca Film said it plans a late 2012 theatrical and Video on Demand release.
"Showcasing his remarkable talents not only as an actor but as a writer and storyteller, Chris Colfer infuses this reinvention of the high-school comic-drama with such spirit and joy that he almost makes us fondly nostalgic," Geoff Gilmore, chief creative officer of Tribeca Enterprises, said in a statement. "Rousing, fresh, superbly acted by a strong ensemble, and wonderfully directed by Brian Dannelly, we are delighted to be partnering with Chris and his fellow filmmakers to share this new take on a classic genre for a new generation."
"I'm so thrilled to be partnering with a company as passionate about this film as we are," Colfer said.
"I was hoping 'Struck by Lightning' would end up somewhere like Tribeca Film, because I watch films all the time on demand," Dannelly said. "It's exciting that an independent film like ours can now be seen by so many people -- instantly -- at the same time the film is premiering in theaters."
"High-school senior Carson Phillips was destined for bigger things than his close-minded small town could ever offer. He was on a path to greatness, but destiny had a different plan when he was suddenly killed by a bolt of lightning in his school parking lot," a synopsis said. "Demonstrating that life is what happens while you're busy planning your future, Carson recounts the last few weeks of his life via witty, insightful flashbacks."
