'Jesus Christ Superstar' closing on B'way

NEW YORK, June 19 (UPI) -- The producers of the Broadway production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" said Tuesday the musical will close July 1 unless ticket sales improve.

As of that date, the show will have played 116 regular performances and 24 previews at the Neil Simon Theatre.

The show officially opened March 22 and received Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award nominations for Best Musical Revival. Cast member Josh Young received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and won a Theatre World Award for his role as Judas Iscariot.

The cast features Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Tom Hewitt as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas and Aaron Walpole as Annas.
