The incident occurred at 3 a.m. Friday.

People.com said a sheriff's deputy in a marked black and white radio car was stopped at an intersection, preparing to turn right when Bynes tried to pass him in her black BMW and collided with the right rear quarter panel of the radio car.

Only minor damage to both cars was reported.

The actress was arrested and bail was set at $5,000, People.com said. It was unclear if she has been formally charged with DUI or released from police custody.

Matt Lauer to stay on 'Today'

NEW YORK, April 6 (UPI) -- Matt Lauer confirmed he has signed a new long-term contract with NBC News, which will keep him on the "Today" show in New York.

"Truth be told, I was developing an idea for a new show, where viewers could tune in every morning and see someone they know lose a little more of his hair every single day right in front of their eyes, but then I thought I could just stay here and do that," Lauer told his co-stars Ann Curry and Al Roker on Friday's edition of the show.

"This is my family. I love this job, I love working with you guys. ... I'm excited. Let's keep going."

Lauer did not discuss the terms of his contract or say how many years he would be staying on the show, but Curry teased him about his "huge bit of great news," saying, "We're stuck with you for a long time, so let's have some fun."

"It was either you or Keith Olbermann," Roker quipped, referring to the recently ousted Current TV political commentator.

"You made out all right," Lauer replied.

"Thank goodness," Roker laughed.

Lauer has co-anchored the "Today" show since Jan. 6, 1997. He joined the morning program in January 1994 as a news reader.

Bruni-Sarkozy moves in Paris in disguise

PARIS, April 6 (UPI) -- France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy says she sometimes moves about Paris in disguise to avoid the crowd of photographers and reporters following her.

Bruni-Sarkozy, who also is a singer and occasional actress, admitted trying to elude the media after U.S. first lady Michelle Obama said she goes on "covert" shopping trips to try to mingle with the American people, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

Bruni-Sarkozy said she's pretty good at disguising her features.

"Recently, I had my handbag searched in the Musee de la Marine (Marine museum)" in Paris, she said.

"With a wig on, nobody recognizes me in the metro," she said.

Bruni-Sarkozy's revelation comes as her husband, President Nicolas Sarkozy, faces re-election April 22.

The former model said she became adept at disguising her looks during her liaison with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who was married.
