NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Zelda Kaplan, a colorful character on the New York fashion and nightclub scene, collapsed and died at a Manhattan catwalk show, witnesses said.

She was 95.

The New York Post quoted attendees as saying Kaplan was carried out of the Joanna Mastroianni show at The Studio at Lincoln Center after she slumped forward in her seat Wednesday.

Paramedics responding to the scene were unable to revive her, the Post reported.

"Zelda passed away, right there, in the front row. Security carried her out, but the show just carried on. Everybody is distraught," one witness told the newspaper.

"Passing away in the front row was how it was meant to be. Zelda loves fashion, so she died for fashion. She would have wanted to go out in style," her close friend, fashion designer and performance artist Richie Rich, told the Post. "Zelda always said, 'Live, live, live and have fun.' ... I hope the angels are holding her right now."
