NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Barbara Walters asked Syrian President Bashar Assad in an interview to air on U.S. television about alleged human-rights violations he committed, ABC said.
The interview, Assad's first with an American news outlet since an uprising began in his country last March, is to air Wednesday across ABC News platforms, including "Good Morning America," "World News" and "Nightline."
ABC News said Assad sat for the "no-holds-barred" interview with Walters in Demascus. Among the topics he discussed with Walters were his alleged human-rights violations, the international pressure he is under to step down and the impact of economic and travel sanctions against his country.
Walters also met off-camera, but on-the-record, with Syria's first lady Asma Assad, the network's news division said.
