U.K.'s Michael Barrymore charged in wreck

LONDON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Television host Michael Barrymore was arrested this weekend for cocaine possession following a traffic accident near his London home, police said.

Barrymore, 59, was also charged with suspicion of drunken driving after he and another man he was with both denied being behind the wheel of the car, which had struck a curb in West London shortly before dawn.

"The car had collided with the curb just off the main road," a source told Britain's The Mirror. "The officers were surprised when they stopped and realized one of the men was Michael Barrymore."

Barrymore has been on the comeback trail in recent months with mixed results, The Mirror said. The onetime host will be in court for arraignment Dec. 7.

J.R. Martinez named Rose Parade marshal

PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 27 (UPI) -- The Tournament of Roses named J.R. Martinez, the injured Iraq war veteran who won "Dancing with the Stars," as grand marshal of its Jan. 1 parade in Pasadena.

Martinez will ride at the front of the 123rd edition of the parade, which is seen on worldwide television and leads up to the Rose Bowl college football game.

This year's parade has the theme "Just Imagine," which tournament officials said fits Martinez perfectly.

"J.R. is not only a courageous and engaging role model for us all but has dedicated himself to helping not only servicemen and servicewomen, but all Americans facing challenges," Tournament President Rick Jackson said in a statement. "His outlook on life is admirable and we couldn't be happier to have the chance to celebrate the New Year with him."

Martinez was seriously burned in an explosion while serving as a U.S. Army paratrooper in 2003. After extensive recovery and rehabilitation, he went on to break into acting on the ABC soap opera "All My Children."

Martinez also teamed up with Karina Smirmoff on this season's "Dancing with the Stars." The couple's win last week brought Martinez a phone call from Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

Panetta congratulated Martinez for his fancy footwork and for his advocacy on behalf of other wounded veterans, a Pentagon spokesman told The Hill.

Chaz Bono engaged

SEATTLE, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Chaz Bono asked his fiancee, Jennifer Elia, to marry him in a moment that will air on the couple's reality television show.

Bono, 42, gave Elia an engagement ring in Seattle in the upcoming 1-hour special "Being Chaz," the follow-up to the Emmy-nominated documentary "Becoming Chaz," People magazine reported Friday. "Becoming Chaz" documented Bono's transition from female to male.

"It's gorgeous. Thank you so much," Elia says of the ring. "It's stunning. It's huge."

"Being Chaz" airs 8 p.m. Sunday on OWN and includes some of the backlash Bono received for being the first transgender contestant on "Dancing with the Stars."

"People feel so angry that Chaz is entering their television," Elia says in the documentary. "People who make change get shot, and I don't think that's worth it. ... This is insane. It's not worth doing a show if you're going to get shot.

"I don't want him to die for a cause," she added.
