CHICAGO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Mike Welsh, 40, former bass player for Weezer, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his Chicago hotel room, authorities said.
Police responded to the hotel after Welsh was found unresponsive in his room Saturday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:50 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office believes drugs were involved, though an autopsy scheduled Sunday should confirm, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Weezer was in Chicago to perform at the Chicago RiotFest and Welsh had reportedly planned to attend the concert, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"As many of you may have heard, Mikey Welsh has passed away," read a statement on the group's "Weezerpedia" page. "The news was announced via his official Facebook page earlier in the evening. Understanding that many here are grieving, Weezerpedia said it has created a digital eulogy page for Mikey Welsh where fans can post stories, pictures, or thoughts. R.I.P. Mikey."
Welsh was part of the band from 1998 to 2001 and left due to a nervous breakdown, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
