Prince William friend accused of assault
LONDON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A close friend of Britain's Prince William is being investigated on allegations he assaulted a soldier during an army exercise, police said.
Maj. Nicholas van Cutsem, an escort at Prince William's wedding to Catherine Middleton, allegedly struck the soldier with a horsewhip during training, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.
Van Cutsem, the prince's friend since childhood, was commander of the Captain's Escort during the royal wedding in April, riding alongside the duke and duchess of Cambridge as their carriage traveled to Buckingham Palace.
The incident allegedly occurred at a training camp in Norfolk during an exercise simulating an attack on a royal coach.
"Half the squadron [was] posing as protesters but on this occasion they were successful in overcoming the ceremonial guard," a source told The Sun. "Several of them were pulled off the coach and in the process the allegation was made against one of the senior officers for using his whip."
A Defense Ministry spokesman said it could confirm that the Royal Military Police was investigating the allegation, The Daily Telegraph said.
"The alleged incident occurred during a military exercise which involved mounted troops dealing with a public order situation," the spokesman said. "It would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation is ongoing."
