LONDON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- British pop art icon Richard Hamilton has died, The Gagosian Gallery announced. He was 89.

The BBC said the man known as the "Father of Pop" died following a short illness. The nature of his ailment was not disclosed.

Best known for his 1956 collage featuring a body builder and a can of ham, the artist had been working on a retrospective of his work in the days leading up to his death, the British broadcaster noted.

The exhibition is to be shown in London, then will travel to Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Madrid next year, the BBC said.
