"Inevitably, it was hard to whittle down the long list to six titles," former MI5 chief Stella Rimington, chairwoman of this year's judging panel, told the BBC. "We were sorry to lose some great books. But, when push came to shove, we quickly agreed that these six very different titles were the best."

Howard Jacobson's "The Finkler Question" won the literary award last year.

The nearly $80,000 prize is awarded to an exceptional work penned by a writer from the United Kingdom or Ireland.
