LONDON, July 1 (UPI) -- Actor Kevin Spacey is playing the titular monarch of "Richard III" in a West End production helmed by his "American Beauty" director Sam Mendes.

The BBC said Spacey is earning praise from British critics for his performance in the contemporary re-telling of William Shakespeare's history play at London's Old Vic theater. The production is to run through Sept. 11.

Spacey's previous collaboration with Mendes on "Beauty" resulted in a Best Actor Oscar for the star in 1999. He won a Supporting Actor Oscar for "The Usual Suspects" in 1995.

He will be seen this month in the big-screen comedy "Horrible Bosses."
