Bill Nye collapses on stage

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Bill Nye, known on TV as "the Science Guy," collapsed onstage during an appearance at the University of California, witnesses said.

Nye, 54, got back up quickly and resumed his presentation, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

USC senior Tristan Camacho said Nye was striding toward the podium Tuesday night when he went down in mid-sentence.

"Then after about 10 seconds, he popped back up with much gusto and asked everybody how long he was out for and went on with a story about how a similar thing happened to him that morning," she said.

Camacho said Nye's speech was slurred and he stumbled against his laptop computer as he tried to forge ahead, sipping water from a bottle. He eventually left the stage, the Times said.

"Nobody went to his aid at the very beginning when he first collapsed -- that just perplexed me beyond reason," USC senior Alastair Fairbanks said. "Instead, I saw students texting and updating their Twitter statuses. It was just all a very bizarre evening."

The newspaper said paramedics were summoned but it was unclear whether Nye was treated or transported elsewhere.

Bristol Palin's 'Dancing' sparks standoff

VERMONT, Wis., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Wisconsin police say a 15-hour standoff with an armed man at his home began with the man's frustration with Bristol Palin's success on "Dancing with the Stars."

Investigators said Steven Cowan, 67, whose wife said has been taking medication for bipolar disorder, was watching the TV show Monday night with his wife at their Vermont home when he became agitated during the dance number by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Police said Cowan demanded his pistols, then found a shotgun and some rounds when his wife did not produce the pistols, which had been hidden by his daughter due to safety concerns. Cowan's wife fled the home after he shot the TV.

Police said hostage negotiators and a dog team were called in during the standoff. Cowan was eventually coaxed out of the home Tuesday.

Cowan was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment.

Winehouse plans Brazilian concerts

LONDON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- British soul singer Amy Winehouse has announced plans to perform four concerts in Brazil this January.

The shows will be Winehouse's first scheduled, full-length concerts since 2008. They follow a surprise appearance she made during a charity club night last month at a pub in London, the BBC said.

The dates for her "one-off tour" include three concerts during Brazil's Summer Soul Festival -- Jan. 8 in Florianopolis; Jan. 13 in Recife; and Jan. 15 in Sao Paulo. She is also scheduled to perform Jan. 11 in Rio de Janeiro, Winehouse's Web site said.

Tickets for all four shows are to go on sale Monday at www.livepass.com.br.

"Amy will be joined at the three Summer Soul Festival shows by Mayer Hawthorne and Janelle Monae, with support at the Rio de Janeiro show also coming from Janelle Monae," the Web site said.

Winehouse, 27, has received more attention in the past few years for her addiction to drugs and erratic behavior than she has for her Grammy Award-winning music.

However, she is working on songs for a new album, the BBC said.
