NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Comedian Artie Lange returned to the New York stage last weekend, eight months after trying to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the abdomen.

Lange, 42, is a stand-up comic best known for his appearances on Howard Stern's radio show.

He has long battled an addiction to drugs and was treated in the psychiatric ward of a hospital for months after trying to kill himself with a kitchen knife last January.

The New York Post reported he was greeted by tremendous applause when he performed unbilled at the midnight shows Friday and Saturday at Manhattan's Comedy Cellar.

"Oh, you guys are going to bring a tear to my eye," Lange reportedly said.

"He had a great line when he opened the show," comic Craig Gass told the Post. "He said, 'Well, folks, I gotta say I am so glad that Fashion Week is over because I am (expletive) exhausted.' "
