ORLANDO, Fla., May 30 (UPI) -- Holiday crowds were met by animal rights protesters outside the gates of SeaWorld in Orlando, Fla., which has two pregnant whales.
Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals picketed outside SeaWorld's main entrance Saturday with signs reading "SeaWorld breeds for Greed," the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Sunday.
PETA spokesman Bryan Wilson told the newspaper the protest was sparked by Seaworld's announcement that two of its orcas are expecting.
"It's sad to be bred in captivity -- to not feel what a real wave feels like," a pregnant protester told the Sentinel. "It's like keeping your child in a crib all day."
Last week, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced it had put SeaWorld "on notice" for the February death of whale trainer Dawn Brancheau, the Sentinel said.
Brancheau was pulled underwater and drowned while working with a killer whale named Tilikum.
"This OSHA report shows that SeaWorld puts profit above everything," Wilson told the Sentinel.
