DETROIT, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Detroit's three-day Motown Winter Blast kicked off Saturday amid 20-degree temperatures ideal for ice skating, sculptures and entertainment, officials said.
"We have perfect conditions," Richard Teeple, Henry Ford Community College Ice Carving Club adviser, said. "This is ideal weather. These will last a long time."
The event, founded in 2006 as Detroit's Winter Blast, offers carnival rides, marshmallow roasting, arts and crafts, wine tasting, food and Motown music, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.
Attendees are being asked to donate a book, can of food or item of clothing as admission to the festival. The items will go to the Grosse Pointe Rotary and Matrix Human Services' campaign for people in need.
Festival goers not bringing asked-for items are being asked to contribute $1.
The event features more than 30 music performances and all performers have been asked to insert at least three classic Motown songs into their sets, the Free Press said.
