Doctor pleads innocent in Jackson's death

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Michael Jackson's personal physician pleaded innocent to involuntary manslaughter charges Monday in Los Angeles in connection with the pop icon's death.

Conrad Murray appeared before Judge Keith Schwartz and entered an innocent plea after turning himself in at a branch courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport, CNN reported.

Bail was set at $75,000, the Los Angeles Times said.

Michael Jackson's parents, Joe and Katherine, and three of his brothers were at the courthouse when Murray arrived. CNN reported that when he was asked for his reaction to the charge of involuntary manslaughter, brother Jermaine Jackson said, "Not enough."

Murray had been under investigation for his treatment of Jackson in the time leading to the singer's death at age 50. Jackson's death was ruled a homicide after lethal levels of the anesthesia propofol and sedatives were found in his system.

Police have said Murray, based in Texas, admitted he administered the drugs to Jackson to help him sleep shortly before he died June 25.

The Superior Court complaint against Murray claims he "did unlawfully, and without malice, kill Michael Joseph Jackson" by acting "without due caution and circumspection," reports said.

Murray has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and his lawyer has said he fully cooperated with the investigation.

106.5 million people watched Super Bowl

MIAMI, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An estimated average of 106.5 million viewers tuned in to see CBS Sports's coverage of Super Bowl XLIV, the U.S. network said Monday.

Sunday's game between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts set a record for most-watched U.S. program, breaking that of the 1983 finale of the classic sit-com "M*A*S*H," which was watched by 106 million, the network said.

The Saints beat the Colts 31-17.

"With all the memorable story lines going into Super Bowl XLIV combined with the awesome power of the NFL, we are thrilled with this rating, and I am extremely proud of the way the entire CBS Television Network produced, sold and promoted the most-watched television show in history," Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports, said in a statement.

'General Hospital' to air 12,000th episode

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. soap opera "General Hospital" is to air its 12,000th episode this month, ABC said Monday.

The daytime drama, which has been on television for more than 46 years, will reach the milestone Feb. 23.

ABC noted it would take a traditional 22-episode-a-year series more than 545 years to air as many episodes as "GH" will have done by the end of the next two weeks.

"In any climate, it is amazing that we have the opportunity to celebrate such a momentous occasion," Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps said in a statement. "This milestone honors the strength of the daytime drama and looks to the future that 'General Hospital' will continue to air many, many more episodes."
