'Priscilla,' 'Sister Act' get Olivier nods

LONDON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- "Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical" and "Sister Act" were among the shows nominated for the best new musical Olivier Award in London Monday.

Also nominated in the category are "Spring Awakening" and "Dreamboats and Petticoats."

Competing for the title of best new play are "Enron" by Lucy Prebble, "Jerusalem" by Jez Butterworth, "The Mountaintop" by Katori Hall and "Red" by John Logan.

Up for best new comedy are "Calendar Girls" by Tim Firth, "England People Very Nice" by Richard Bean, "Parlor Song" by Jez Butterworth and "The Priory" by Michael Wynne.

The nominees for best revival of a play are "Arcadia," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "The Misanthrope," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "A View from the Bridge" and "Three Days of Rain."

The nominees for musical revival are "Annie Get Your Gun," "Hello Dolly!" "A Little Night Music" and "Oliver!"

In the running for best actress in a play are Gillian Anderson for "A Doll's House," Lorraine Burroughs for "The Mountaintop," Imelda Staunton for "Entertaining Mr. Sloane," Juliet Stevenson for "Duet for One" and Rachel Weisz for "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Vying for the best actor prize are James Earl Jones for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," Jude Law for "Hamlet," James McAvoy for "Three Days of Rain," Mark Rylance for "Jerusalem," Ken Stott for "A View from the Bridge" and Samuel West for "Enron."

The contenders for best actress in a supporting role are Hayley Atwell for "A View from the Bridge," Michelle Dockery for "Burnt by the Sun," Alexandra Gilbreath for "Twelfth Night," Keira Knightley for "The Misanthrope," Rachael Stirling for "The Priory" and Ruth Wilson for "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Nominated for best actor in a supporting role are Mackenzie Crook for "Jerusalem," Rory Kinnear for "Burnt by the Sun," Tim Pigott-Smith for "Enron" and Eddie Redmayne for "Red."

Shortlisted for best actress in a musical or entertainment are Melanie C for "Blood Brothers," Patina Miller for "Sister Act," Samantha Spiro for "Hello Dolly!" Hannah Waddingham for "A Little Night Music" and Charlotte Wakefield for "Spring Awakening."

Up for best actor in a musical are Rowan Atkinson for "Oliver!" Aneurin Barnard for "Spring Awakening," Bob Golding for "Morecambe," Alexander Hanson for "A Little Night Music" and Tony Sheldon for "Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical."

The awards are to be presented March 21.
