DENVER, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The American Humane Association says it monitored the use of animals during the production of "Avatar" and gave the film an outstanding rating.

James Cameron's latest blockbuster was nominated for a best picture Oscar this week.

"American Humane applauds 'Avatar' director James Cameron and the production for earning our highest rating by ensuring the safety of the animals used in the filming," Karen Rosa, vice president of American Humane's film and television unit, said in a statement.

"However, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was apparently unaware that, even though the film was produced using (computer animation), live animals were used -- for motion capture."

PETA erroneously recognized the film and its director for using computer-generated images instead of live animals.
