LONDON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- British painter Richard Wright was named the winner of this year's Turner Prize at a ceremony at the Tate Britain, organizers said.

The Daily Telegraph reported the 49-year-old artist won the $41,000 cash prize Monday night for his series of abstract wall paintings inspired by medieval art, graphics and typography.

The newspaper quoted Wright as saying winning the award felt "shocking but very good."
