'30 Rock' wins best comedy Emmy
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- "30 Rock" won the Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series in Los Angeles Sunday.
The show's leading man, Alec Baldwin, picked up the prize for best actor in a comedy series.
"I'll be honest, I'd trade this to look like him," Baldwin joked, referring to presenter Rob Lowe. "I really would, actually. ... I want to say thank you to everybody from the Academy who is responsible for this and congratulations to all the other nominees."
The actor went on to thank his "30 Rock" co-star, writer and producer Tina Fey, as well as what he called "the best cast and crew."
He dedicated his award to Lorne Michaels, a "30 Rock" producer who is also the head of "Saturday Night Live," a sketch comedy show for which Baldwin has appeared as guest host 14 times.
Baldwin described Michaels as "the greatest boss you could ever have and who has believed in me for all of these years."
"I love you, Lorne," he said. "Thank you very much."
"United States of Tara" star Toni Collette won the Emmy for lead actress in a comedy.
The Australian actress beat out the favorite for the honor, Fey, who has won a raft of awards in recent years for her performance on "30 Rock."
"Wow, this is insanely confronting," Collette said as she collected her statuette. "Thank you so much to the Television Academy for recognizing our show in this way. I'd like to acknowledge my fellow nominees. I'm so humbled to be here in this room, let alone up on this stage."
Collette's film credits include "Muriel's Wedding," "The Sixth Sense" and "The Hours."
'Mad Men' snags best drama Emmy
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- "Mad Men" won the Emmy Award for outstanding drama series for a second consecutive year in Los Angeles Sunday.
Glenn Close won the prize for lead actress in a drama for her work on "Damages." The award was presented shortly after the telecast's traditional "In Memorium" segment, which celebrated the lives and careers of Paul Newman, Natasha Richardson, Farrah Fawcett, Eartha Kitt, Karl Malden, Van Johnson, Ed McMahon, Patrick Swayze, Henry Gibson, Michael Jackson and other luminaries who died during the past year.
"You know, I've been sitting here and I just think it is such a huge privilege to be in the community that we're all a part of," Close said in her acceptance speech. "Looking at who we lost this past year, you think, what a legacy we have and what power we have and I want to salute my -- I call them now -- my category sisters because we've all been together now at these affairs and I respect you and I'm inspired by your talent. We all go where there's great writing. That's what we live off of."
She then thanked the screenwriters for "their incredible words" and for giving her "maybe the character of my lifetime."
Bryan Cranston earned the honor for lead actor in a drama for his performance in "Breaking Bad."
"I'm so thankful for so many things. ... I'm so thankful that Glenn Close is actually a woman (and thereby not eligible for this award)," Cranston said, staring at his statuette. "I'm thankful to AMC and Sony for being so courageous and supportive throughout this whole process of 'Breaking Bad.' I am honored to be in the company of these great actors. It is an embarrassment of riches for me and, I gotta tell you, I'm a poor kid from the Valley; I don't know what I'm doing up here. I feel like Cinderfella."
