LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Jay Leno interviewed Kanye West and Jerry Seinfeld for the premiere of his U.S. primetime series "The Jay Leno Show" Monday night.

West made headlines Sunday when he took the stage during the MTV Video Music Awards presentation, grabbed the microphone from Taylor Swift, who was giving an acceptance speech, and told the crowd Beyonce, not Swift, should have won the award.

West had been scheduled to perform with Beyonce's husband Jay-Z and Rihanna on the first episode of Leno's new chat show Monday, but before the trio sang "Run This Town," West sat down with the host to discuss and apologize for his behavior the previous night.

"It's actually someone's emotions that I stepped on. It was rude, period. I'd like to apologize to her in person," E! News said West told Leno.

Leno then asked West what he thinks his mother, who died in 2007, would have thought about his actions.

"You know, obviously, I deal with hurt and, you know, so many celebrities, they never take the time off," West replied. "And I've never taken the time off, just music and music and tour after tour, and I'm ashamed that my hurt caused someone else's hurt. ... After this, I need to just take some time off and analyze how I'm going to make it through the rest of this life."

Earlier in the "Leno" broadcast, Seinfeld said he was happy to appear on his longtime friend's new show.

"But the truth is, when I heard that I was going to be asked to be the first guest, I was slightly disappointed that you couldn't get a bigger name," E! quoted Seinfeld as saying. "Is your staff aware that I have not been on television for 11 years?"

The first edition of "The Jay Leno Show" also featured Leno's trademark monologue and headlines segments, as well as a video appearance by Oprah Winfrey.
