French photographer Ronis dead at 99

PARIS, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Famed French photographer Willy Ronis, known best for his black and white photos of Paris, has died at the age of 99, an industry official says.

Stephane Ledoux, president of the Eyedea photo agency, applauded Ronis and his popular photographs of everyday life in Paris following his death in the French capital on Saturday, the BBC reported Sunday.

"We have lost the last of the great men," Ledoux said of Ronis, who died of unspecified causes.

Meanwhile, French President Nicolas Sarkozy tabbed the late photographer as a "chronicler of post war social aspirations and the poet of a simple and joyous life."

The BBC said Ronis last photograph was taken in 2001, decades after his well-received career began in the 1930s.

Radio France Internationale said Ronis was an honored guest at the French photographic event, Rencontres d'Arles, this year. The international photography event concludes Sunday.

"His mind was clear and lively right up to the end... His photography was profoundly humanist and true," Ledoux said.
