Police say Warhol works stolen in LA

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Millions of dollars worth of original art made by the late artist Andy Warhol was stolen from a Los Angeles home, police say.

Los Angeles police Detective Donald Hrycyk said 11 large portraits by the Pop Art icon were stolen from the home of noted art collector Richard L. Weisman last week, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Hrycyk, head of the police department's art theft detail, said Weisman's housekeeper noticed the Warhol collection was missing Sept. 3.

Other Warhol pieces, along with other items in the home, were not disturbed during the theft and there were no signs of forced entry, Hrycyk said.

Police said an anonymous source has offered a $1 million reward for information that leads to the missing art works being recovered.

In a recent interview with the Times, Weisman detailed how he came to possess the missing "The Athletes" collection.

"I commissioned him to do this set of athletes because, generally speaking, the worlds of art and sports don't mesh that well," Weisman told the Times of the 1970s commission.
