Smirnoff, Chmerkovskiy break up

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Karina Smirnoff's publicist says the Ukrainian-born dancer has broken off her engagement to fellow dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

"I can confirm that this is true," Smirnoff's representative told People magazine, without offering any further details about the split.

The "Dancing with the Stars" and "Burn the Floor" co-stars dated for about a year and announced their engagement last December.

Smirnoff previously dated actor and "DWTS" contestant Mario Lopez.
