LONDON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The Royal Opera House in London says it only played a 25-minute portion of the world's first Twitter opera Saturday because of length concerns.

The Daily Telegraph said the full Twitter opera, whose abbreviated version was performed at the Deloitte Ignite arts festival, constitutes 900 Twitter messages and is the length of a seven-act operatic work.

Members of the public were invited to help write the Royal Opera work by sending in proposed opera lines through the social networking service Twitter. Specific details of the makeshift opera's plot were not reported.

Composers Helen Porter and Marc Teitler created music to support those lines in preparation for Saturday's performance by mezzo-soprano Hannah Pedley and baritone Andrew Slater.

While some critics panned the Twitter opera, Ignite publicity officer Sara Parsons told the Telegraph the performance is intended to draw new listeners to the world of opera.

"It's about getting people involved and interested in opera," Parsons said, "and it's certainly done that."
