BUFFALO, N.Y., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. TV series "Reading Rainbow" is set to go off the air after 26 years of entertaining children throughout the United States, a TV official says.
WNED, Buffalo, official John Grant, whose New York station serves as the home station for "Rainbow," said since first debuting in 1983, the PBS series has earned a loyal following among U.S. residents, National Public Radio said Friday.
"The series resonates with so many people," Grant said of the children's series that will air for the last time next Friday.
Grant said the decision to end the series came about because of a lack of funding for the program. But Grant also said a shift in children's programming toward series that teach viewers how to read was responsible for the show's upcoming goodbye.
"Reading Rainbow taught kids why to read," Grant told National Public Radio. "You know, the love of reading – (the show) encouraged kids to pick up a book and to read."
