Singer Chris Brown arrives for preliminary hearing in Rihanna assault case in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Recording artist Chris Brown was sentenced in a Los Angeles court Tuesday to 1,400 hours of labor-oriented service for beating up his singer-girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown, 20, pleaded guilty in June to felony assault for attacking Rihanna, 21, in Los Angeles in February.

After the sentence was handed down, the Los Angeles Times reported Brown was involved in at least two prior domestic violence incidents. Citing a probation officer's report, the newspaper said the two previous incidents had not been reported to authorities.

The first was in November in Europe when Rihanna slapped Brown and he shoved her into a wall, the court document indicated. The second was in Barbados about three weeks before the February incident, when Brown reportedly broke two windows in a Range Rover the couple had borrowed from a local dealership. No one was injured, the damage was repaired and no police report was filed, the Times said.

People.com said Brown was ordered to complete his labor-oriented service in Virginia, where he has a home. He will be supervised by the chief of police in Richmond and will perform graffiti removal, cleaning and maintaining grounds, and washing cars.

CNN said Brown will also be placed on probation for the next five years under the supervision of the state of California.

He must undergo domestic violence counseling and refrain from communicating with Rihanna for the next five years, as well, People.com said.
