Pol wants train station named for Jackson

NEW YORK, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- A campaign is under way to rename a Brooklyn, N.Y., subway station for late entertainer Michael Jackson, who filmed his "Bad" video in it in 1987.

Jackson died June 25 at the age of 50. The cause of his death is still under investigation.

City Councilwoman Letitia James said she has approached the Metropolitan Transportation Authority about naming or co-naming the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in honor of the controversial pop icon, the New York Post reported.

James told the newspaper although the MTA has denied her request, she plans to organize a petition drive.

"Having Michael Jackson visit and moonwalk at this station was a huge deal not only for Brooklyn, but all of New York in the 1980s," James said. "And renaming this station in his honor would put it on the map and help

ensure that people don't forget."

Agency sources told the Post none of the subway stations in the MTA system are named or co-named after individuals because it could confuse straphangers.
