NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Andy Warhol's 1984 portrait of U.S. pop star Michael Jackson has been sold at a New York auction for more than $1 million, MTV News reported.

Janet Lehr, owner of the Vered Gallery in East Hampton, said the buyer wished to remain anonymous.

Lehr bought the work for less than $300,000 from an anonymous seller shortly before Jackson's June 25 death, MTV said.

The 1984 image, done in synthetic polymer, shows Jackson wearing his red uniform from the "Thriller" album. The work measures 30 inches by 26 inches.
