READING, England, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- British singer George Michael was freed without being charged after being detained on suspicion of drunken driving following a serious car crash, police say.
An unidentified Thames Valley Police spokeswoman confirmed Michael, who only recently got his driver's license back after a two-year suspension for previous infractions, was released by police after five hours and is not facing criminal charges, the BBC reported Saturday.
The network quoted Michael as saying he was "stone cold sober" at the time of accident.
Michael's Land Rover hit the rear of a truck about 1 a.m. Friday on a highway in Berkshire County, England, and the "Wham!" singer was promptly taken to a police station near Reading for questioning.
Friday's accident is the latest in a string of driving incidents in recent years.
The BBC said the pop star pleaded guilty to charges of driving under the influence in June 2007. The singer, who was banned from driving for two years following his plea, was accused of crashing into three parked cars and leaving the accident scene without informing the vehicles' owners.
