GARY, Ind., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Michael Jackson's father asked their hometown of Gary, Ind., to pay him and others $5,000 to attend a memorial for the late pop singer, city documents show.

Jackson died June 25 at the age of 50. The cause of his death is still under investigation.

The Gary Post-Tribune reported it was unclear whether the city had paid the bill, which was expected to cover Joe Jackson, Marshall Thompson and the Chi-Lites, who attended the service at the U.S. Steel Yard baseball stadium last month.

The claim form the celebrity mourners submitted did not specify if the money is intended to cover the group's travel expenses, the Post-Tribune said.

Donations reportedly were accepted to help offset the cost of the memorial.
