NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning screenwriter and novelist Budd Schulberg died Wednesday after falling ill at his home in Long Island, N.Y., his wife said. He was 95.
Schulberg, who won the Oscar for his screenplay for the 1954 Best Picture winner "On the Waterfront," was taken from his home to a hospital Wednesday afternoon. His wife, Betsy, told The New York Times efforts to revive him failed.
His film credits also included "A Face in the Crowd" and a screen adaptation of his novel, "The Harder They Fall." His novel, "What Makes Sammy Run" -- a rags-to-riches story of a young man who resorts to backstabbing to find success in Hollywood -- was turned into a hit Broadway musical.
"On the Waterfront" was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
Schulberg was born March 27, 1914, in New York, the son of a movie executive. He is survived by his wife and five children, the Times said.
