LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Australian actor Hugh Jackman has been tapped to play P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman on Earth," a contemporary movie musical, Variety said.

Jackman, who is best known for his work in the "X-Men" film franchise, won a Tony Award for his performance in the stage musical "The Boy From Oz."

The Twentieth Century Fox production of "Showman" is being penned by Jenny Bicks, and produced by Laurence Mark, Jackman and his producing partner John Palermo. The team previously collaborated on the 81st Academy Awards presentation, for which Jackman served as host, Variety noted.

British singer-songwriter Mika reportedly is in talks to write the film's music and lyrics.
