LOS ANGELES, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- "Funny People" took over the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend in U.S. movie theaters, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.
The Adam Sandler comedy took in an estimated $23.44 million in ticket sales.
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" held on at No. 2 with $17.7 million, while last week's top movie, "G-Force," slipped to No. 3 with $17.06 million in estimated gate receipts. "The Ugly Truth" was pushed down one spot to No. 4 at $13 million.
Another new movie, "Aliens in the Attic," a kids' adventure flick starring Carter Jenkins, Ashley Tisdale and Tim Meadows, debuted at No. 5 at $7.8 million.
Filling out the top 10 were "Orphan" at $7.25 million, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" at $5.3 million, "The Hangover" at $5.08 million (in its ninth week), "The Proposal" at $4.85 million and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" at $4.6 million.
Another new movie, "The Collector," a thriller starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar, failed to crack the top tier, coming in at No. 11 with $3.63 million.
Gone from the top 10 were "Public Enemies" and "Bruno."
