NEW YORK, July 29 (UPI) -- Actress Alfre Woodard is joining the cast of the new U.S. medical drama "Three Rivers," CBS announced Wednesday.

Woodard's television credits include Emmy Award-winning performances in "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law," "Miss Ever's Boys" and "The Practice." She also has starred in numerous feature movies, including "Cross Creek," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys" and "Radio."

In "Three Rivers," Woodard will play Dr. Sophia Jordan, a "brilliant surgeon at the top of her field and head of surgery for the hospital," the network said in a release. "She has a vast amount of experience, training all around the world, which gives her an extremely diverse point-of-view."

The show is to premiere Oct. 4.
