LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) -- A 3D animated adaptation of Dr. Suess's children's story "The Lorax" is headed to the big-screen, the U.S. film's producer said.
The story by the late Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel, is about a group of creatures trying to survive as their forest home is threatened by a company removing its trees.
Variety.com said the movie version is being made by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, and is to be co-directed by Chris Renaud, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, with Paul and Daurio penning the screenplay.
The film is slated for a March 2, 2012 theatrical release.
"Ted Geisel was prescient in an uncanny way when he wrote the book and explored themes of greed and how that can lead to the destruction of the environment," producer Chris Meledandri told the entertainment industry trade newspaper regarding the timeliness of the story.
