"Tropic Thunder" premieres in Los Angeles

NEW YORK, July 21 (UPI) -- Actress Alicia Silverstone has signed up to star in the Broadway production of "Time Stands Still," the Manhattan Theatre Club said Tuesday.

Silverstone is best known for her work in the film "Clueless" and TV's "Miss Match."

She will join the previously announced Laura Linney in the cast of the New York premiere of Donald Margulies' new play. The limited engagement is to be directed by Tony Award-winner Daniel Sullivan.

Silverstone will be returning to Broadway after her appearance in the hit production of "The Graduate."

"Time Stands Still" is to begin previews at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in Manhattan Jan. 5, 2010 in preparation for a Jan. 28, 2010 opening night.

Silverstone will again play Mandy, a role which garnered her critical acclaim during the play's world premiere in Los Angeles, the MTC said in a release.

"Are we supposed to deny ourselves ordinary happiness because there's misery in the world? This is one of many questions Donald Margulies poses in his intelligent and timely new play," the theater company said. "James and Sarah, a journalist and a photographer, have been together for nine years and share a passion for documenting the realities of war. But when injuries force them to return home to New York, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life."
