LOS ANGELES, July 5 (UPI) -- The expansion of the Academy Awards' best picture category from five films to 10 should ultimately prove fruitful to smaller films, a U.S. expert says.
Movie marketing Professor Reed Martin of New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business said having double the number of best picture nominees should result in movies in the typically overlooked independent film category getting a nod, E! Online reported Saturday.
"I think it'll pull in an additional film on both sides of the spectrum," Martin said, "another art film and other successful Hollywood film."
Meanwhile, Reed downplayed any chance the best picture expansion could prove beneficial to stars seeking best acting Oscars.
"There are Oscar-worthy performances," Reed said. "The Academy-worthy performances always a cut above and always acknowledged to be on a different playing field."
E! Online said one likely benefactor from the Oscar switch is the animated movie "Up," which Las Vegas oddsmaker Johnny Avello feels could land a best picture nod.
"Now that we go 10 deep, there might be a possibility," Avello said. "It would have a shot."
