'The Proposal' opens at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, June 21 (UPI) -- "The Proposal" took over as the No. 1 movie in U.S. theaters this weekend, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.

The romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock as a magazine editor who pushes her assistant to marry her so she can keep her work visa, tallied an estimated $34.11 million in gross receipts in its first weekend, pushing "The Hangover" to No. 2 with $26.89 million in ticket sales and "Up" to No. 3 at $21.34 million.

Another new offering, "Year One," a Harold Ramis comedy starring Jack Black, started out at No. 4 with a respectable $20.2 million.

The rest of the Top 10 included "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" at $11.3 million, "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" at $7.3 million, "Star Trek" with $4.7 million, "Land of the Lost" with $3.98 million, "Imagine That" with $3.1 million and "Terminator Salvation" at $2.8 million.

Gone from the top tier are "Angels & Demons" and "Drag Me to Hell."
