MALIBU, Calif., June 21 (UPI) -- U.S. actor David Duchovny and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, are attempting to maintain a close relationship despite being separated, sources say.

An unidentified friend of the "Californication" actor said the two TV and film stars still love one another and are attempting to maintain a close relationship for their two children, People.com reported Sunday.

"Their relationship has really improved," the friend said. "They're still in love. They very much care for each other and whatever happens they are working it out for the kids."

Duchovny and Leoni, who starred in "Jurassic Park III" and "Deep Impact," are the parents to 7-year-old son Kyd and 10-year-old daughter Madeline.

"Their first priority through everything was staying close for their kids and making life as great as it can be for them," an anonymous source offered. "They'll always be a family."

People.com said the couple reported their separation in 2008 after Duchovny voluntarily sought help for sex addiction.
