LOS ANGELES, June 16 (UPI) -- Actress Natalie Portman is attached to play the lead in Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller "Black Swan," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Portman would play a veteran ballerina locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer who could be real, a supernatural apparition or a hallucination, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

If negotiations go well, Aronofsky could start shooting "Swan" with Portman as early as this year, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Aronofsky previously directed "Requiem for a Dream," "The Fountain" and "The Wrestler."

Portman's film credits include "The Other Boleyn Girl," "V for Vendetta" and "Garden State."
