LOS ANGELES, June 5 (UPI) -- "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is set to debut in a record 167 U.S. IMAX theaters, its distributors announced Friday.

The sequel to the 2007 blockbuster, "Transformers," is slated to hit IMAX screens and conventional theaters June 24. Directed by Michael Bay, the film DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures features several scenes shot with IMAX cameras.

"The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film," Bay said in a statement. "IMAX's all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with 'Transformers' fans around the world."

"With the recent growth of our network, we have the opportunity to reach the widest day and date IMAX audience ever, which is particularly encouraging given how great this film looks and sounds in IMAX," said IMAX Corp. Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Gelfond.
