Brother: Media didn't exploit Boyle

LONDON, June 3 (UPI) -- Susan Boyle's brother Gerry says neither he nor the "Britain's Got Talent" runner-up feel she was exploited by the media.

Susan Boyle, 48, was admitted to a London clinic Sunday to be treated for exhaustion after weeks of being in the spotlight due to her sudden fame on the talent competition show and Internet.

Asked on CBS's "The Early Show" if his sister collapsed under the sheer pressure of the competition as has been reported, Gerry Boyle replied: "I think anxieties were high. ... I think seven weeks of not pressure, but certainly media-intensified attention. You know, someone who's used to the media would find that difficult. And I think eventually exhaustion, worrying about the outcome of the competition and anxiety, just took its toll."

Gerry Boyle went on to say he doesn't think the media exploited Susan as some critics have alleged.

"No, she doesn't think so, and nor do I," he said. "I think the media, yes, it's marvelous to have all this attention, to have all these warm feelings coming from across the country, across America, from -- let's face it, Susan seven weeks ago was simply a little lady from Scotland. And you know, she's very grateful that the opportunities are now opening up, perhaps, hopefully in the next few days. But, no, I wouldn't say the media exploited her. I think the media, as we look back, Susan will realize the media give her an opportunity."
