Comedian Kahn dies in climbing accident

CUSCO, Peru, May 31 (UPI) -- Los Angeles lawyer and comedian Kenneth Kahn, has died in a climbing accident in Peru, his public relations consultant says.

Consultant Bob Mazza said Kahn died of injuries suffered in a fall while mountain climbing alone near the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The 66-year-old stand-up comic retired from his criminal defense practice this year and had been vacationing in South America when Wednesday's climbing accident occurred.

"Kenny was a unique blend as a lawyer and comedian," attorney Robert Shapiro said of Kahn. "He grew up in a horrific childhood and achieved tremendous success in the legal profession."

In addition to working as a comic during the 1990s, Kahn earned fame for representing several notable clients such as Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt.

Kahn also defended convicted spy Andrew Daulton Lee, whose tale of intrigue was featured in the 1985 movie "The Falcon and the Snowman."

The Times said Kahn is survived by two siblings and two stepchildren.
