LOS ANGELES, May 30 (UPI) -- Actor Mykelti Williamson has reportedly signed on to play an anti-terrorism official in the eighth season of the hit U.S. TV series "24."

The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday the actor, who played Private Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue in "Forest Gump," will portray the head of the New York branch of the Counter Terrorist Unit.

The addition of Williamson to the "24" cast comes as the Fox series is retooling its cast for the upcoming season. Other new cast additions include Freddie Prinze Jr., John Boyd, Jennifer Westfeldt, Doug Hutchison and Chris Diamantopoulos.

The seventh season of "24" concluded May 18 with lead character Jack Bauer's life hanging in the balance.

The Reporter said Williamson's past TV credits include appearances on "Boomtown" and "CSI: NY."
