NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- Singer and actress Michelle Williams has signed on to play Roxie Hart in the West End production of "Chicago the Musical," Music World/Columbia Records said.

Williams is set to appear in the role at London's Cambridge Theatre during a limited six-week engagement running from July 13 through Aug. 23.

"It's a real thrill to be given the opportunity to play Roxie Hart in the West End's spectacular production of 'Chicago,'" Williams said in a statement. "She's one of the greatest characters in the history of musical theater and it's both a challenge and a lot of fun to bring her to life onstage. I hope that everyone who comes to the show enjoys it as much as I do."

"Michelle is a prime example of an all-round entertainer," added Mathew Knowles, president and chief executive officer of Music World Entertainment. "She has enjoyed many successes as a music artist and now theatergoers are going to experience her far-reaching talents once again."

Williams, a former member of the award-winning female group Destiny's Child, will be the first African-American actress to play Roxie Hart in the West End's 12-year-run.
