LOS ANGELES, May 26 (UPI) -- "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: The IMAX Experience" earned $5.4 million from 160 IMAX theaters in the United States on Memorial Day weekend.
IMAX Corp. and Twentieth Century Fox made the announcement regarding the IMAX box-office take Tuesday.
The IMAX release contributed about 8 percent of the movie's overall holiday weekend domestic gross of $70 million from less than 2 percent of the screens.
The film also opened well internationally, posting $520,000 from IMAX theaters abroad, the companies said in a news release.
"We're very pleased with the overall performance of the film and we're happy to see so many people choosing to experience it in IMAX," Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution for Twentieth Century Fox, said in a statement. "The powerful image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience has added an extra level of excitement to an already exciting film and we look forward to continued success during the weeks ahead."
