NEW YORK, May 23 (UPI) -- Actress Joan A. Stanton, who earned fame voicing character Lois Lane on the radio series "The Adventures of Superman," has died in New York, her family says.

Stanton's daughter, Jane Stanton Hitchcock, confirmed the former stage and radio actress died Thursday of an intestinal blockage at the age of 94, The New York Times reported Saturday.

"Superman" premiered on the radio in 1940 in the wake of the superhero's first appearance in comic books two years earlier.

Stanton, then known as Jane Alexander, joined the series for its seventh episode and went on to provide the voice of Superman's love interest, Lois Lane, for hundreds of "Superman" episodes.

The show, which featured actor Bud Collyer as the title character, appeared in various formats on the radio until 1951, the Times said.

The Times said in addition to her daughter, Stanton is survived by her son, Tim, and her grandson, Liam.
