LOS ANGELES, May 21 (UPI) -- U.S. voice actor Wayne Allwine, who played the iconic character Mickey Mouse for decades, has died of complications from diabetes, the Walt Disney Company said.

He was 62.

EW.com said Allwine began his Disney career in the mail room in 1966, then went on to win a sound-effects editing Emmy Award for his work on the TV show "Amazing Stories" in 1986.

Allwine became the third man to be the voice of Mickey 32 years ago and he has since been heard in movies, TV shows and Disney theme parks. Walt Disney was the original voice of the animated rodent.

His wife, Russi Taylor, has lent her voice to the character of Minnie Mouse since 1986, EW.com said.
