LOS ANGELES, May 20 (UPI) -- Kris Allen was declared the winner of the singing competition show "American Idol" in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

He beat out finalist Adam Lambert for the honor.

"It feels good, man, but Adam deserves this ... I'm sorry. I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy. Thank you so much," Allen said upon learning his fate.

The two-hour season finale featured performances by Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Steve Martin, Carlos Santana, Kiss and Queen.

Nearly 100 million votes were cast for the finale.
